Back in 1979, Focal was established in Saint-Etienne, France by Jacques Mahul for the purpose of providing high-fidelity loudspeakers to the world. For most of their earlier years, Focal-JMlab focused exclusively on loudspeakers for home use. However, in more recent years they have expanded its product lines to include speakers for automobiles, headphones, as well as professional monitors.

In order to ensure that each loudspeaker meets the stringent demands of audiophiles everywhere, the company focuses on ensuring that they have the ability to control every aspect of the manufacturing process. This means that the design, development, and manufacturing are all done in-house.
